1.
Eligibility
a.
The competition is free and open to all Foundation and Undergraduate students in
UTP
ONLY.
b.
Participants shall be responsible for the protection of their own intellectual
properties,
patent
or registration rights.
2.
Exclusions
The followings are not acceptable for
the exhibition or competition:
a.
Inventions, utility innovations or designs which are known to be used by others
or
contrary
to public order, morals, public health or welfare.
b.
Those that cannot be transformed into tangible embodiments e.g. scientific
principles,
abstract
theories and works of art, which may be the subject matters of copyright.
c.
Inventions that use living organisms, human/ animal parts or body fluids (for
example,
blood,
urine). (Exceptions: teeth, hair, nails, dried animal bones).
d.
Poisons, drugs, controlled substances, hazardous substances or devices (e.g.
firearms,
weapons,
and ammunition).
e.
Sharp items (e.g. syringes, needles, pipettes, knives) (Exceptions: small
cutter, scissors).
f.
Flames or highly flammable display materials.
3.
Entry
a.
A team is permitted to submit only ONE (1) entry for the Problem Solving
Competition.
b.
Each team shall comprise of a maximum of FIVE (5) members and no minimum
limits.
c.
Each team are allowed to register for ONE(1) problem category.
d.
The entry must be accompanied with the registration forms and shall include all
details as
stated.
The registration form (hardcopy) will be done at week 11.
e.
Entry form lacking the required details will be disqualified.
4.
Display and Demonstration by Competitors
a.
Competitors shall display and demonstrate to the Panel of Judges the illustrations
or drawings and samples of
products described in their entries together with a description of the raw materials used.
b.
Only English language will be used throughout the competition, which includes
the
display,
audio/visual aids and demonstration/presentation by the competitor.
c.
Such displays and demonstrations shall be maintained at the exhibition site for
the entire
duration of the exhibition of SEDEX30. The final judging
shall take place at the exhibition
site
on the day as allocated by the SEDEX30 Organizing Committee.
d.
At least one person is required to staff the booth at all times during
exhibition hours,
Unless
with permission from the SEDEX30 Organizing Committee.
e.
After the exhibition, all booths and boards/panels must be in the same
condition it was
first
given to exhibitors. Representatives of the SEDEX30 Organizing Committee
will
verify
whether booths are entitled to reclaim the deposit or not.
5.
Supervisor
a. Each team is allowed to have a
maximum of ONLY ONE (1) supervisor. However, this condition is not
compulsory.
b. The supervisor shall be a professor,
lecturer, scientist or researcher in UTP. This individual must have a
fundamental background in the science/engineering/technical knowledge and
should have a close contact with the students during the course of the project.
c. The supervisor must review the rules
of the SEDEX30 to ensure they are understood and abided by the team under his/her
supervision.
d. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring the students’ invention is
eligible for entry in the SEDEX30.
6.
Labels & Abstracts
Competitors shall be assigned
official labels bearing entry number, name of competitor and title of exhibit. Competitors
in their respective booths shall prominently display all labels and abstracts
about the entries.
7.
Closing Date of Entries
Entry
form shall be delivered or mailed to the SEDEX30 Organizing Committee
and shall be
received by 3rd August 2012,
unless otherwise permitted by the Organizing Committee. This is to ensure the
invention meets the predetermined criteria.

Certificate will be
provided to all winner and participant and the winner will be sponsored for the
participation in local and international exhibition if qualified for the said
exhibition.
9.
Judgment Criteria
The
general criteria for judging are as follows:-
a.
Creativity and innovativeness.
b.
Scientific concept.
c.
Application of basic scientific knowledge and understanding.
d.
Demonstration of poster and simulation/working concept.
10.
Disclaimer
a. The decision of the Panel of
Judges is final. No correspondence or appeal will be entertained.
b.
Competitors are deemed to agree that they shall abide by such decisions and
shall not be
entitled
to be paid or indemnified for any losses, expenses, or damages by the Panel of
Judges
or any of its members or the organizers of the competition in respect of any
matters
which
may arise from or be connected to the organization conduct and results of the
competition.
c.
Every care shall be exercised by the SEDEX30 Organizing Committee to handle,
transport
or
storing the models and other materials submitted by the Competitors, however
the
SEDEX30
Organizing
Committee shall not be held responsible for any damages or losses to
the
same.
d. All the idea presented belongs
to the university. In the case of entries which have not been granted Letter of
Patent, Utilities Innovation Certificates of Registration of Designs by any
competent authority for the granting of such rights, the entry cannot be patent
under the competitor’s name.
e. The inventions not duly
indicated on the entry forms are strictly prohibited. The competitors will also
forfeit any award to them.
f. The statements above are
subject to change without prior notice and neither UTP nor
SEDEX30 Organizing Committee
should be held responsible for any mishaps that occur
before or during or after the
events.
11.
Brief Guideline on How to Start Up the Project
a. Form a group or a team
consisting 1 to 5 members, which include a leader.
b. Contact the person in charge
to get the link to online registration. Fill it online and send it to the
SEDEX30 Organizing Committee. (Get all the files and fill the registration form
with all the details required).
c. Discuss about the project and
coming out the abstract for the solution of the problem your team choose. The
format of the abstract will be sent to you too by the person in charge.
d. Submit the abstract to sedexutp@gmail.com before the closing
date.
e. The shortlisted team will be
announced. Only the shortlisted team have the qualification of participating in
the exhibition of problem solving competition in SEDEX 30.
f. Qualified team are required to
prepare a poster (maximum of 1 m-wide, no restriction on height) and creatively
compile all the data, discussion and necessary information on the poster.
g. Qualified team is also expect
to coming out with the simulation /working concept to demonstrate the solution
of the problem during the exhibition. (Note: simulation/ working concept is
mandatory)
h. Since SEDEX30 is a Science and
Engineering Design Exhibition, only projects, which are related to science and
technology, are going to be considered. To avoid any misunderstanding the teams
are advised to inform the title of their projects to the organizer or contact
the organizer to clarify any doubts they might have regarding this matter.
